Local Museum Wins "Access For All" Award
13th November 2008
The Awards are organised by Tourism West Midlands, the strategic tourism board of Advantage West Midlands, in association with the national, Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2009. The prestigious ceremony was held at Birmingham ICC, hosted by Heart FM's Ed James and ITV Centrals Joanne Malin.
The Museum beat off tough competition from Cadbury World and the Heritage Motor Centre who were also finalists in the "Access for All" category. The Museum and exhibition were praised for their easy access for wheelchairs and the free loan of mobility scooters and tactical diagrams. The Museum was also commended on their prompt response to customer enquiries and the helpfulness of its staff.
Since the opening of the National Cold War Exhibition in February 2007, over 600,000 visitors have flooded through the gates of the Museum.
Alex Medhurst, General Manager says; "We are very pleased that the RAF Museum has been recognised for its achievements and the hard work of dedicated staff by being awarded with this very prestigious gold award for access for all".
The National Cold War Exhibition project has been made possible thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Advantage West Midlands, the European Regional Development Fund, Bridgnorth District Council, the Rural Regeneration Zone, the Ministry of Defence, and the Museums own fundraising initiatives.
