Maynards Farm Bacon
Attraction in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Maynards specialise in traditional bacon and ham curing. We use unrefined sugars, syrups, herbs and spices and free range British Pork.
Regional varieties include Staffordshire Black - a traditionally dry cured bacon finished with thick, black aged treacle or Shropshire Mild - dry cured with a blend of nutmeg, coriander and mace. Home made sausages in natural hog castings and hand linked include Redcastle - a delicious garlic, chilli and herb sausage ideal with mash and onion marmalade, Old English seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices and Sun Dried Tomato and Basil - Fresh and summery. Hams are cut to order and are available smoked over real oak chippings in our traditional brick kiln or unsmoked. Delighted to be finalists in the Waitrose small producers competition 2003, Maynards were the only bacon curers to get through and we received a Highly Commended for our Traditional Bacon.
At our farm shop, situated on the A49 at Prees Green, we stock a wide selection of delicious produce, as much as possible sourced locally. Sharing our premises now with Alternative Meats we have the benefit of being able to offer a much wider selection of fresh meat. In addition to free range pork, we now regularly stock ostrich, the extremely popular rose veal - animal welfare friendly and freedom food accredited - an abundance of seasonal game and the more unusual and not for the faint hearted marinted kangaroo or crocodile steaks (obviously not grown locally). Cheeses include the famous Applebys Cheshire - made a couple of fields away and Staffordshire Organic Mature Cheddar - made a few miles away. Try the wild garlic cheddar, a rich cheese flecked with evening pickings of the wild herb. Our dairy cabinet groans with such delights as fresh organic yoghurt made in Herefordshire in seasonal varieties like Damson or English Strawberry. Frozen roulades in chocolate, lemon, strawberrys and cream, or hazlenut and raspberry are selling faster than they can be made it seems and are the ideal standby to keep in the freezer for last minute entertaining.
Local honey, pickles, jams, sauces and biscuits provide great gift ideas for taking home as souvenirs and Snugburys ice creams, smoked nuts and Teme Valley apple jucies are great for little treats. Parking is directly outside the shop in the farm yard with makes life easier. Don't forget to say hello to Josie - a large Oxford Sandy and Black, Dave our rather ugly Vietnamese Pot Belly and Lillie and Sausage - our Kune Kune pigs as they get a bit offended. Look out for us in Rick Steins Food Heros Directory 2003 which will accompany the new TV series. We are in the Super Heroes category! Having gained certificates in the Great Taste Awards, and West Midlands Awards 2002 we are now waiting in anticipation for the results of the 2003 competition and are feeling hopeful
