Whitchurch
Whitchurch, the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Shropshire is another bustling market town.
The Romans called it Mediolanum, and their town plan survives in the layout of our streets.
You may notice that our fine church boasts an equally splendid clock. In fact, there are amazing public clocks all over the place. All becomes clear when you learn that Whitchurch is home to the firm of J.B. Joyce (est. 1690), the oldest clockmakers in the world. Their work can be found across the globe, from Kabul to Shanghai , but no town has more examples than Whitchurch.
If food is the thing that makes you tick you should definitely take a visit to Whitchurch farmers market. Stalls are packed with the freshest local produce, for you to savour whilst in North Shropshire or take home as a memory of your visit (or both!).
Our Heritage and Craft Centre allows you to spend time with Joyce, the Romans, and much else besides. Afterwards, perhaps a walk is called for; in which case, the Jubilee Park is the starting point for five long distance walking routes, including our own Shropshire Way. This will take you to the Llangollen Canal and a superb flight of staircase locks at Grindley Brook, about a mile out of town.
Alternatively, you could take one of the many town trails; less demanding but no less interesting. The town trails have another advantage as they take in all of the shops and most of the pubs.
Whitchurch is also famous for cheese, once holding thriving cheese fairs, Whitchurch is regarded by many as the real home of Cheshire Cheese and this typically English fayre is still being produced locally today.
